This has definitely been an interesting week for music videos in hip-hop. First Kanye West, then James Franco, and now— Eminem. This is definitely one of the best music videos I’ve seen in a while, especially for hip-hop. Usually, contemporary rap videos like to rely on this basic formula:
beautiful, scantily clad women+stacks of money+bottles of liquor+luxurious setting=mediocre production
Kanye is one of the few MCs whose videos have strayed from this mold (though he came back to it, in a really weird way, with Bound 2). Eminem is another. In addition to his wicked wordplay, Slim Shady is known for his entertaining and creative videos. Rap God is no exception. The video kicks off with Eminem’s impersonation of the 1980s TV character Max Headroom, which reminds me a bit of his My Name Is video. Afterwards, we see Eminem projecting a number of superhuman qualities: moving (and rapping) at supersonic speed, traveling through portals, walking on water, and levitating in the air. But the coolest part is The Matrix reference: we see Eminem unconscious in a chair, his head connected to wires, as cameras scan walls full of information; things like current events, comic books, video games, and hip-hop music videos—all of which are downloaded into Eminem’s brain, making him the rap god that we all know today.
Rap God is a pretty kickass video, and I suggest checking it out if you haven’t already. It was released on Wednesday, about a week after Eminem’s new album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, went platinum.
